2009 NCRS
Route 66 Road Tour
Carlisle, Pennsylvania- The 2009

Road Tour has actually been in planning for nearly two years. The planning activities ramped up before I even arrived home from the St. Charles Convention: I had several phone messages and emails regard- ing the 2009 Tour waiting for me! Numerous NCRS members have ex- pressed interest in doing another Route 66 Tour. That is what we will do, but we will try to avoid a total repeat of the 2002 National Road Tour itinerary.

Personally, I’ve missed both the 2002 and the 1991 Route 66 Road Tours. So for me, the typical Route 66 sites will be all new anyway. For those of you who have been on a previous NCRS Route 66 Tour (or any other Route 66 Tour for that matter) you’ll have the opportunity to visit places you missed the last time. If you traveled with me in 2006, 2007 and 2008, you know how I feel about the NCRS Road Tour. This is YOUR Tour. Make it what you want it to be. I’ll provide you with the basic Tour structure: the overnight cities, the hotel room blocks and special events along the way. And I’ll provide the “official” route instructions to you: you do not have to depend on your GPS. Fact is, if you do, you will not go where I want to take you via the route I’ll travel. You can always depart from that route to take in other sites. On the 2009 Tour there will be plenty of opportunity to do just that. (Your GPS might come in handy on those excursions.)
The Eastern Tour will be a fast-paced route to Effingham, Illinois - the starting point for the 2009 National Road Tour. The Eastern Tour will depart Carlisle, Pennsylvania Thursday morning July 2nd. Scott and Kay Sinclair plan to depart Bolton, Ontario, Canada, Tuesday June 30th or Wednesday July 1st to travel the 700 mile route to Effingham through Michigan.

The Preliminary Route 66Road Tour Plan:

July 3rd (Friday)
The Eastern, Canadian Tour having picked up participants from Michi- gan and perhaps the SE group (I need a volunteer to lead this group) will   meet   at   Mid   America Motorworks  www.mamotorworks.
com in Effingham by mid-day if pos- sible. We’ll tour the Mid America Motorworks production facilities during the afternoon and Mike Yager’s amazing “M.Y. Garage” to- wards evening.

July 4th (Saturday)
We’ll travel approximately 500 miles to overnight in Tulsa, Oklahoma. I’ll identify the special event for the evening – at least some fireworks to watch.

July 5th (Sunday)
The Tour will travel another approximately 500 miles to either Tucumcari or Santa Rosa, New Mexico. We will meet the Rocky Mountain and Texas Tour groups at the overnight stop.

July 6th (Monday) - July 10th (Friday)
The remainder of our Tour through New Mexico and
Arizona will be at a slower pace taking in more Route
66 sites for the next 5 days. The specific details are TBD at this time. Look for updates on the details of this part of the 2009 National Road Tour in the next NCRSDriveline. One example: a side trip to the Grand Canyon South Rim.

July 10th (Friday)
We will arrive in the Paso Robles/Cambria/San Simeon, California area Friday evening July 10th picking up the Southern California Tour at a specific point TBD.

July 11th (Saturday)
We’ll tour the Hearst Castle www.hearstcastle.com in the morning (photo at right). I have arranged a group reservation: you just have to sign up via the Road Tour registration form. In the afternoon (follow- ing the Hearst Castle tour) we’ll drive California High- way 1 along the coast to Monterey and Seaside, Cali- fornia where the North Western Tour led by Mike Doty will join us. The NW group will have left Yakima,

Washington the morning of July 9th, traveled through Bend, Oregon and then info Klamath Falls. On July 10th the
NW Tour will overnight in Lake Tahoe leaving there on the morning of July 11th for Seaside, California.

July 12th (Sunday)
The 2009 “Last Night Out” will again be a special event. We’ll visit the Reggie Jackson Collection Saturday evening in Seaside and once again handle convention registration check-in for Road Tour participants. We are working to arrange laps of Mazda (Laguna Seca) Raceway. Goggle “Laguna Seca Corkscrew” to view a variety of videos of the corkscrew. Driving the “Corkscrew” is on my personal “bucket list” – maybe this year I’ll actually do it. This is not a “done deal” at this time – but we are working on it. Also on Sunday, the Road Tour will tour the Monterey Peninsula 17 Mile Drive. The 2009 Road Tour will conclude Sunday afternoon by traveling from the Monterey-Seaside area to the San Jose convention site in groups of 6 to 8 cars. The resulting spread of arrival times will minimize the disruption and inconvenience that would occur if the Road Tour were to arrive
as one large group.
And one final point – about The NCRS Founders® Award. Anyone on the west coast planning to pursue the Founders Award should contact me about your options and plans for joining the Road Tour. I expect that many of you will have convention committee work assignments and may have concerns as to how you can satisfy the Founders Road Tour requirement. The 2009 San Jose convention is no different - it happens every year and we manage to solve the problem.

So join us on another exciting NCRS Road Tour as we will be “On the road Again” to San Jose building memories that truly prove “Life is a highway.”
